Koala Coloring Pages are black and white images of one-species animals. This means that koalas are unique creatures. Outwardly similar to a bear, they are not “relatives” to it. Koalas are not found anywhere except Australia. These animals were accidentally noticed after decades of discovery of the island. It turned out that koalas sit motionless for most of the day, and descend from the eucalyptus tree to the ground in order to move to another tree. Most of the work I create as an illustrator is in color, but most of all I love to draw with a pencil and almost as much work with ink. So in this tutorial I’ll show you how I approach the complex illustrations that I enjoy doing so much.
In 2015, I was asked to illustrate the adventure game book Alice’s Nightmare In Wonderland by Jonathan Greene, which portrayed Wonderland as a dark and distorted place inhabited by nightmarish versions of famous Lewis Carroll characters. As an add-on, we published a livery that was so well received that Jonathan even decided to create a second volume entitled Through the Looking-Glass and the Horrors Alice Found There. Again I was asked to illustrate it.
I knew right away that I had to work on the details for my own pleasure. However, 23 illustrations of Koala with a lot of detail would take too much time, so I selected five illustrations that should have been the best and began sketching ideas for them.
Some of the coloring pages are pretty simple outline, but I wanted these illustrations to be almost as good as other custom work that I had to do. And although the finished work should be clean and do without shadows (so as not to interfere with painting it), the process of creating it for me proceeded according to the usual scenario. This script included compositional sketches in a sketchbook, followed by pages after pages of ideas, lists of characters and elements I would like to include, and again rough sketches experimenting with their placement.
For illustrations like this, I fill in sketches page by page, often much more than necessary, then scan and edit on the computer, arrange and rearrange them until I have a good digital compositional sketch. Then I create the finished illustration following this plan. I don’t always draw this way, but it’s an effective and creatively rewarding way of working, including everything I love about drawing with traditional materials and post-processing the drawing on the computer.
To begin with, I populate the sketchbook pages with ideas. To illustrate this scale, I need all the ideas that come into my head, not just characters – I draw and collect interesting shapes, approximate decorative elements and options. At this point, I’m not sure how these elements will work together, but I already have all the ingredients I need.
After scanning my sketches in Photoshop, the first thing I do is come up with a well-balanced composition. One of the ideas from the rough sketches seemed interesting to me, so I’ll use it as a starting point, overlaying other sketches and sketches on top of it to get the plot. Then I create a thin and clean outline on top of this compound sketch.
Then I add characters. I put Alice in the central figure in the form of a heart, and the other characters in round frames around her. I like this stage of work the most. For work, you can use any version of Photoshop.
I keep adding elements from my sketchbook. Some of them I made for the previous book, for example, the clock on the stomach of the Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat. The last one I copied, flipped horizontally and merged the layers to get this symmetrical portrait. It looks unnatural and too symmetrical, but like the rest of the drawing, this is just a sketch, like Koala coloring sheet.
Among the sketches, my favorite was mushrooms with books under their caps, but it was not easy to place them in the illustration. Finally I decided to cover the right side of the “heart” and counterbalanced this with a curving bookshelf on the opposite side. I also added a white fill to the frame.
When I’m done composing the elements, I desaturate all the layers and get a grayscale sketch. I adjust the brightness of each element: I lighten the dark elements, and on the contrary, I make the light ones darker, thus balancing the brightness and contrast of the picture. Finally, I merge all the layers and paint over the paths with blue. The drawing is almost ready to print!
The beauty of working with digital art is that corrections can be made at any stage. Before printing the sketch on A4 Bristol art board, I swapped the cat and rabbit and inserted another version of Sonya’s portrait, which itself consists of two digital sketches. While I could have contoured in ink right on top of the digital printout, a new pencil outline is a useful way to combine all the elements that formed the basis of a composition into a coherent whole. The illustration becomes a whole, not a collection of sketches; you can also tweak something and add new details. The cat, for example, no longer looks unnaturally symmetrical.
The digital sketch looked like a mess of various elements, the new pencil drawing is a single whole: frames and lines flow into illustrative elements, and all elements that were inconsistent in the original version are now corrected. I usually send a black and white sketch to the client before starting the ink outline.
And now the last stage of work begins! I am printing the blue version of the drawing on plain white paper. Again, I work with traditional materials – ink and liners. Many artists prefer to do the outline on a computer, but I love the process of working with real paper and ink.
For the outlines, I use whatever pens or liners I can find handy. Although I can use brushes in a fit of inspiration, for this illustration of Koala I mainly used a variety of pens and liners that can be purchased inexpensively at any stationery store. Of course, I also used my Rotring isographs for the thinnest lines. These are awesome tools!
After 20 hours or more, I decide that the outline is complete. The lineart should be neat, without unnecessary shading, in order to colorize it conveniently, but I don’t want to completely deprive the illustration of such details. So I’ve added some shading here and there.
Not only children, but also adults are fond of coloring today. As a rule, they use published books by famous and not so famous artists, as well as printouts of drawings from the Internet. With the latter, a problem arises: what to do if you really like the drawing, but the quality is nowhere worse? Or what if the printer prints exclusively on office paper with a weight of 80 g / m2? I myself have tried more than once to color such pictures – alas, even the best pencils do not fit on it, not to mention watercolors and paints. Now, if you could transfer your favorite pictures to good paper, or even better – file them into a book …
In this article, we will focus on creating such a book: coloring with your own hands, on good paper, with a hard cover. Now a large number of notebooks of various sizes with blank sheets have appeared in stores: rectangular and square, stitched and on a spiral, book and landscape format, small and quite decent – the size of an average coloring page.
The first two sketchbooks in the photo are Canson notebooks, stitched in black on 96 sheets and purple on a spiral of 50 sheets. The paper is both slightly rough, 120 g / m2. In a notebook with owls, the paper is rather thin, no more than 90 g / m2, so I think it will fit for small, simple coloring, for ordinary pencils. But the color sketchbook – the territory of creativity – is a real find for a fan of coloring books. The paper in it is thick and smooth, format 25 * 25 cm – just the format of the coloring pages of Joanna Basford, Lizzie Mary Cullen, Koala and others like them. At the same time, the manufacturer offers a huge number of types of cover design: I saw several stands with these notebooks in the “Dirigible” store – my eyes widened.
Secondly, an automatic 0.5 mm pencil with a shaft is not harder than HB, but better even softer. It is better to take the rods Koh-I-Noor or Faber-Castell, they do not scratch the paper.
Thirdly, a good eraser is the same Koh-I-Noor with an elephant, or Faber-Castell with koala. Children and even more so colored ones are not suitable – I think there is no need to explain why.
Fourth – and this is probably the most important thing – you need a black capillary pen. Not a gel, not a roller, but capillary. There are handles from Stabilo with a thickness of 0.4 mm, or Steadler with a thickness of 0.3 mm. These are budget options. I used them until I tried edding and MICRON. What is the difference? In thickness. In order to make a high-quality drawing, thin lines are required, that is, it is desirable that the tip of the pen is literally as thick as the tip of a needle. These are the handles that edding and Sakura (MICRON) offer. Their nibs, marked 005, correspond to a line thickness of 0.2 mm.
Fifth, you need paper tape – I use the one that is used to seal the windows in the fall. You can take an ordinary one, but it will be difficult to tear it off the paper without loss, and the paper one holds securely and can be removed easily.
Sixth, you will have to acquire a flat lantern. Either buy, or ask dad / husband / grandfather – men in storerooms and not that will be found. 🙂
I know that many people use window glass or even a monitor screen. Unfortunately, with a finished hardcover book, and even with a thousand small details that coloring books for adults have, this trick will not work: your hands will fall off in the first ten seconds. If you have a spiral notebook, you can use a fluorescent lamp: put it on the floor between two chairs, cover the chairs with glass – and draw on all this. Very convenient, by the way. But if the sketchbook is stitched, look for a flashlight.

First, let’s select the illustration that we want to transfer to the album. Personally, I leave the first page, as in any coloring book, for a drawing with the words “This book belongs”. So far, however, I have not found a suitable drawing, but this is a matter of time. We print the selected illustration on the printer at once in the required size so that the picture does not crawl beyond the boundaries of the sketchbook.
